A second life in the nave: the chapel reinvented as a place of care
This conversion project will give a new lease of life to a former church, which is currently being studied with a view to its conversion into a place of welcome for people with learning disabilities.
The existing building has a singular geometry and an unconventional structure, marked by a vast nave with enveloping curves and an exposed framework that gives rhythm to the interior space. Converting the site meant working under special conditions, where structural issues had to be constantly reconciled with the need to preserve the building's architectural identity.
Natural light plays a central role in the project. Filtered through the coloured stained glass windows, it shapes the atmosphere inside and reveals the changes in light as the day progresses, contributing fully to the sensitive quality of the future living spaces.
Archival plans of the church, set against 3D views of the situation projected by Formatis architecture, allow us to retrace the evolution of the building and breathe new life into the vast spaces beneath the nave.
