1833 - Refurbishment of an apartment building on commercial ground floor in Brussels

Reinventing the thickness of the urban fabric

Located on a shopping street in the centre of Brussels, this project involves the conversion of a mixed-use building housing shops and residential accommodation.

The project is part of an initiative by the City of Brussels to combat the vacancy of housing above shops, by encouraging their rehabilitation and reintegration into the urban fabric. In this constrained context, our stability mission required a careful structural approach to each phase of the project.

Our office was involved in the design and supervision of the structural works, with particular attention paid to adapting the existing building to new uses. The main challenges were the density of the existing building, the adjoining buildings and the complexity of the circulation systems.

The transformation, which is still in progress, includes major works such as the integration of a patio, an extensive green roof and a new independent staircase, enabling the available volumes to be reconfigured while improving access to light and the habitability of the floors.

The 3D views developed as part of the project particularly highlight the complexity of the interventions and the dialogue between the existing structure and the new installations.
