Enhancing what already exists: reinventing the art of urban living
Originally conceived as a conventional property development, this project in Forest has gradually evolved into a broader exploration of quality of life, shared spaces and the creation of new green roofs in Brussels.
The project involves the renovation of an existing apartment block and the addition of two new storeys, creating a number of duplex flats that are flooded with natural light. The new spaces extend the living area up towards the rooftops, where terraces and hanging gardens offer unique views of the cityscape.
For our firm, the project presented a particularly stimulating structural challenge. Adding new volumes to an existing building required an in-depth analysis of the existing structure as well as constant dialogue with the architectural firm O.U.V.R.A.G.E.S., in order to bring this ambitious project to fruition. This is based on a balance between existing and contemporary materials, as well as bespoke structural solutions, such as the design of double-helix staircases, which have enabled us to rethink circulation and access to the new rooftop spaces.
In this way, the structure serves as the framework for a new way of living: more open, brighter and more communal. This architectural quality has been recognised by the project’s inclusion in the Wallonia-Brussels Architecture Inventory 2023–2026 (https://ica-wb.be/fr/node/2641) and its publication in the journal A+, recognising the success of a transformation that combines innovation, functionality and respect for the existing building.
