The invisible strength of long spans
The construction of these two apartment blocks marks a new stage in the quest for a structure that is both high-performing and unobtrusive. Behind the airy feel of the spaces, which open out onto their surroundings, lies an ambitious technical design, conceived to offer future residents generous floor space and great freedom in terms of interior layout.
For the first time, the practice is utilising post-tensioning technology, enabling the construction of slabs with very long spans whilst significantly reducing the number of support points required. This feat is highlighted by the site photographs illustrating the various stages of construction. This structural approach demonstrates engineering’s ability to harness the forces at play in order to create open spaces and facilitate new architectural possibilities.
Through this project, Forme & Structure continues its commitment to a form of engineering in which precise calculations, an understanding of architectural intentions and attention to how the space will be used go hand in hand. Here, mastery of innovative technical solutions enables a dialogue between strength and lightness, stability and openness, in order to create a balanced structure capable of offering generous spatial dimensions whilst ensuring its long-term durability.
