Under the dome, memory in the spotlight
Located in the heart of Brussels, this large-scale transformation project breathes new life into a century-old art deco mansion, converted into top-of-the-range flats. Behind the richness of the original decor, the mission was one of delicate tension: to accommodate new uses while preserving the soul of the place. Each project was conceived as a dialogue with the existing building, with a view to ensuring continuity.
The major structural challenge was to reorganise the volumes and introduce new supports to meet contemporary ecological requirements without altering the balance of the original building. In particular, the insertion of lift shafts required meticulous work to integrate them into the very heart of the existing structure. The heritage features, which have been preserved and enhanced, continue the memory of the site and contribute to a harmonious transition between eras. In this way, the project becomes a play of reflections between past and present, in which the existing material dialogues with interventions carried out with care and expertise.
At the apex of this composition, the steel and glass dome unfurls its circular geometry below the main stairwell. A true centrepiece, the dome captures and diffuses light through the levels, accompanying the verticality of the building in a gradual rise towards clarity. A synthesis of structure and symbol, it embodies the balance achieved in this project: an architecture in which technology takes a back seat to the singularity of the site, with stability becoming the discreet support for the illumination of heritage.
